MOVERS AND SHAKERS 2009

'Movers and Shakers' was an initiative by local branches of London Cycling Campaign in which people of influence within the community act as role models to demonstrate that cycling can be for everyone.

Councillor Keith Prince:

'It's very important to catch people and get them interested while they are young,' he told the 'Ilford Recorder'. 'It is a way of combating child obesity. I also think we need more cycle paths to encourage children to take up cycling. I'm considering cycling from my home to the Town Hall from now on.'

Roger Evans, GLA representative for Havering and Redbridge:

'I was surprised how easy it was', he said. 'I'm thinking of getting a bike, if only because it seems a better way of exercising than going to the gym.'Read Roger's blog: www.city-hall.blogspot.com

Redbridge Cabinet members Sue Nolan and Michelle Dunn had their first cycle lessons for many years at the new Redbridge Cycling Centre. They both found it really exhilarating and can't wait to go cycling at RCC again.

There was a very unusual line-up on the top track at Redbridge Cycling Centre when thirty top role models got on their bikes to demonstrate that cycling is fun and a great way to keep fit:

Would YOU like to gain cycle confidence?

An initial off-road session with a professional cycling instructor will check out our role model's bike if he or she has one, and carry out any refresher training on control skills such as emergency stopping. Once this has been done, further on-road training can take place.

The training will be done at a time and place that are convenient for the participant, such as a route currently cycled, to make it easier and more pleasant, or an intended route not yet cycled, such as a trip to the local shops or park.
