The Woodford Meet was an almost annual event between the years 1882 and
1914. It attracted hundreds of cyclists, many in fancy dress riding decorated
bicycles, and thousands of spectators. The Meets raised large sums of
money for local charities, for example local hospitals, and only ended
with the start of the Great War.
Following a suggestion to Redbridge Council's Cycling Liaison Group by
Councillor Peter Lawrence early in 1999, a group of local cyclists, businesses
and community groups established an ad-hoc committee to stage a re-enactment
of the Woodford Meet as a way of marking the new Millennium. The event
would also raise money for local charities, just as the original Meets
had done.
Months of planning all paid off on Saturday 24th June 2000 when over
three hundred cyclists, most in fancy dress and many on decorated bikes,
cycled from Woodford Green to an Edwardian Festival in Wanstead
Park, watched by thousands of shoppers and residents. £3,000 was collected
for local charities in the process.
